REVIEWS
OF "DARNING MY SOCKS" BY COMPLEX ROUTINE
Igloomag - 12/02/05
(Part of a review combo/feature)
"On this classical Skam-infested beat monger, we're introduced to the
cyclical effects of rhythmic ambiences and old-school techno appeals (as noted
on the opener, "The End of a Dream"). Elsewhere you'll find church
anthems ringing around door-bell chimes and regurgitated digital flux. Don't
take this the wrong way, however, Complex Routine is well versed in being able
to reveal complex programming next to swift if not classical progressions ("Leave
Me with my Song" and "Darning my Socks (No One Comes Near)," for
example). On "Delayed Truth," the closing track, Complex Routine opens
the flood-gates and arranges a wash of ambiences next to stuttering beat work
and eerie rhythms --simply mind-bending. "

"Complex Routine has created pure quality. Four tracks of adventure soundscapes,
crammed to the brain with so much goodness and energy giving magic, that you
can't not love it. "The end of a dream" is amazing enough to warrant
the release itself.
Awesome stuff."

"This is a beautifully produced four-track EP with as many beautiful tracks.
Aptly building his tracks from the ground up, adding element after element and
thereby creating a complex routine that is thoroughly enjoyable listening to.
Not being lost in the beats’ department either the forward movement of
all the tracks is clearly defined.
The favourite track on this EP is probably “Darning
My Socks (No One Comes Near)” with
its brilliant programmed beats, quirky and
slightly jazzy melody fused with a bass-filled
and warm atmosphere.
Continuing the furious release tempo associated
with digitally based labels Complex Routine’s
contribution “Darning My Socks EP” ensures
that the high standard set by Boltfish is
adhered to. Once again my compliments goes
out to Boltfish and their associated artists."

"Thailand-based Sveto has recorded once before on Boltfish as ‘Sveto
the Fool’ on the ‘Region Zero’ LP from a few months
back but this is his first full release. The opening track ‘The
End Of A Dream’ opens with moody chimes and a music hall piano
followed by chunky beats that sound like they’re going to break
into a drum and bass refrain but never quite get there. Layers of strings
and various electronic beeps, pops and whizzes are added as the mood
builds to a gratifying conclusion. ‘Leave Me With My Song’ is
a more clicky affair with a sweet souful melody and echoed percussion
and beats, it sounds like music made in a giant industrial warehouse. ‘Darning
My Socks (No One Comes Near)’ follows the same formula as the previous
track, with more clicky percussion and a double bass and a digitized
trumpet, it has a bit of a scary break in the middle but on the whole
is very chilled. As is ‘Delayed Truth’ which is more of the
same mellow clickyness but with a trippy twist."
